Dude, I love your site and you seem like a reasonably nice guy and all, but I'm afraid you and I part ways when it comes to the issue of 'indoor/outdoor' pets. My wife and I have 5 cats, and they have ALWAYS been indoor cats. We have a room for them with cat toys (which they ignore if we are around) and several cat treees for them to frolic and romp on. We'd be worried sick if we ever let our cats out, and to say if a cat goes out and doesn't come back "get another cat" seems rather cold and harsh to me. Odds are they won't pick up a fatal disease when indoors (not guaranteed) but we are certain they won't be run over by a car, killed by other wildlife or tortured and killed by psychotic individuals (two of them are black cats). I don't think we're being particularly cruel or inhumane keeping them inside.
